To Our Current and Future Subscribers
The Jackson Advocate newspaper wants to come into your home each week to keep you informed of local, state, national and world events. In order to do this, it requires your commitment of 52 weeks per year .

It's probably not a hard sell to ask you to renew your subscription to the Jackson Advocate. Yet, we are compelled to tell you how much we appreciate your support of the oldest Black newspaper in the State of Mississippi. You are special to the Jackson Advocate because you choose to have your name on the subscription rolls. Readers are also important to the life of the Jackson Advocate, but subscribers give us additional leverage by providing us with the confidence to reach beyond our individual capacities and rely on that wonderful thing we call faith. Your faith in the Jackson Advocate inspires up to wake each morning with a desire not to rely on what news comes our way, but to be a participant in the search for information that will empower us all to make sound decisions in life.

If you take time to think back to your first encounter with the Jackson Advocate, and evaluate your reasons for remaining a subscriber over the years, I wonder what your thoughts would be. Let me share mine with you.

Seventeen years ago, then president of the Mississippi State NAACP Conference Dr. Aaron Henry charged each branch president in the state to assist the Jackson Advocate. Dr. Henry did this after learning of the Ku Klux Klan attack and a white business boycott that reduced the Jackson Advocate's income by 88 percent.

The first time I picked up a Jackson Advocate was at that meeting. It was the Black History special edition issue. I thought I had picked up a history book. Growing up in Wisconsin, my experience with African American newspapers was quite different. They were social guides to Paul and Mary's wedding, Sharon's birthday party, or Uncle Melvin's funeral. To say the least, I was amazed at the information contained within the pages of the Jackson Advocate.

I am stilled amazed at how the Jackson Advocate remains a great resource for the State of Mississippi. For the past six decades, its purpose has continued to far exceed its Thursday publication. It is what occurs Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday that truly distinguishes the Jackson Advocate as an institution within the African American community. More than that, the white community is also a beneficiary of our continual search for justice and fair play. The voice of the Jackson Advocate is the freedom fighters' cry for justice. It is the voice of the peacemaker. It is the voice of those seeking truth and a common ground to nourish the mind, strengthen the heart, and comfort the soul.

The greatest thing about becoming a part of the Jackson Advocate family is that you become an advocate for truth and justice.

Thank you for your support. Rest assured, your future support will enable the Jackson Advocate to continue to be The Voice of Black Mississippians.

Sincerely,

Alice Thomas-Tisdale
