Criteria For Selection of
Jackson Advocate Internship Awards

The Jackson Advocate Newspaper is pleased to announce the establishment of an innovative Internship Awards program. The Jackson Advocate Internship Awards program earmarks advertising dollars spent with the Jackson Advocate newspaper to help mass communications and journalism students gain practical experience in this very competitive profession.

In Spring Semester 2002, the Jackson Advocate Newspaper is launching this groundbreaking Internship Awards program in partnership with Jackson State University. Each semester, one mass communications/journalism student will be selected to work within the Jackson State University Department of Public Relations under the supervision of the director of public relations. This intern will provide the Jackson Advocate with weekly articles and photographs of campus events to assist the newspaper in documenting the progress of the University, and provide Jackson State University with additional support to keep the community informed of its programs and activities.

Eligibility criteria:

1. Full time mass communication/journalism student at Jackson State University

2. Completion of at least 50 credits at Jackson State University

3. Two letters of recommendation commenting on personal characteristics (e.g., integrity and willingness to work hard);

4. Letter of application that is between 500 and 750 words in length, indicating:

a) reasons for interest in the internship program

b) how internship might benefit you and those in the community

c) your perception of the role of the Black Press in the 21st Century

d) your specific areas of interest (e.g., sports reporting; music/entertainment critique; coverage of fast-breaking news stories; investigative reporting; photography).

Deadline to apply for the Jackson Advocate Internship Awards program for the 2002/2003 school year is April 1, 2002.

We are pleased to announce that the first recipient of the Jackson Advocate Internship Awards program for Spring 2002 is Joyce Hudson, who returns to Jackson State University after 17 years to complete her graduation requirements.
