Asthma 101: Everything You Need To Know If You Have Been Diagnosed

If you need to travel with your asthma medication, particularly if you plan on bringing a nebulizer or other large equipment, it can be helpful to obtain a letter from your doctor explaining their use. When you can prove that an item is medically necessary, it can save a lot of time and hassle while working through airport security. If someone in your home has asthma, do not allow smoking in your vehicle or home. People who desire to smoke should go outside or away from the individual with asthma. Smokers that have the scent on them can trigger asthma attacks. Make sure you use the inhaler in the proper, prescribed method. Find a spot that is out of the way, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to the letter. The inhaler only can help if it’s medicine reaches the lungs. The dosage that is required should be sprayed into the mouth while you inhale air. Be sure to hold the mist in your lungs for about ten seconds.

Genetics and/or environmental factors can cause asthma. If anyone else in your family suffers from asthma, keep watch for any asthma symptoms in your children or yourself. Air pollutants like smoke and mold spores can trigger an asthma attack, so keep your home clean to avoid irritation.

When dealing with an asthma attack, it is important to stay calm. You should immediately use your inhaler and use the inhaler again 30 seconds later. If you do this and you notice that your attack is worsening then you need to get help. Ask a family member or friend to call for ambulatory help or to drive you to the emergency room. On your way to the hospital, breath in and out in a paper bag in order to help calm yourself and get your breathing down to a normal pace.
